Accessible Facilities Westlander

Accessible Facilities – Westlander

The traditional style of rail travel offered aboard the Westlander is not accessible to some customers with disabilities, due to narrow door and aisle ways and lack of accessible facilities on board. Toilet facilities can be difficult to access for some customers with disabilities due to the size of the room and inward opening door.

This service does not have facilities to assist customers who are deaf or hard of hearing or blind or have low vision. Please discuss your requirements with your travel consultant.

Wheelchair or Motorised Scooter Size Limits

Customers who are able to navigate the train without the use of their mobility device may use the luggage car to store their device.

In general, the dimensions for a mobility device on the Westlander is 750mmwide by 1300mm long.

Storage options for non-collapsible mobility devices is only in the luggage carriage and must be added at the time of booking due to limited spaces. Storage options for collapsible mobility devices include the luggage racks at the end of each passenger carriage or in the luggage carriage.

Onboard wheelchair

Collapsible wheelchairs which are compact and can be manoeuvred up and down the aisles are available on all Westlander services. Customers who experience difficulty walking may request the use of these wheelchairs to traverse the aisle.

Important note: Customers using the onboard wheelchair can only use it as far as the end of the carriage doorway and not right to the toilet room entrance. This is due to the doorway width when doors are opened at the end of some carriages. These carriages can be viewed by taking a Train Tour.

Due to the size of the room and inward opening door, it is not possible to enter into the toilet room while remaining in the onboard wheelchair.

Detailed information about the onboard wheelchair is available at Assistance available.
