The Longreach region is situated 700 kilometres from the Queensland coast (approximating 1175 kilometres north west of Brisbane) and covers an area of 40,638 square kilometres (as big as some European countries).  Sitting on the Tropic of Capricorn, Longreach experiences hot summers and mild winters - typically warm and dry with cool nights - the favourite time of year for tourists to visit!

Travelling to Longreach by rail you get a real sense of the vast distances from Australia's busy coastal strip and an appreciation of the huge challenges faced by Australia's early pioneers.

Longreach is the home of some of Australia's most iconic stories – from the pioneering Qantas airline to local legend, Harry Redford, aka 'Captain Starlight, who became a symbol of bushcraft, adventurous spirit and larrikin lawlessness. Today, Longreach's fortunes are still tied to the land – the vast cattle and sheep stations in a wide-open landscape that can be harsh but also stunningly beautiful.
