Travelling long distances can cause muscle stiffness and poor circulation, especially sitting for extended periods. DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) occurs most frequently among people who are immobilised. Immobility for even short periods can cause DVT. We recommend the following for our customers travelling on our services (Based on a recent statement by The Australasian Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis):Drink plenty of (non-alcoholic) fluids during travel.Wear loose, non-restrictive clothing.Stand up every hour or so to ease lower back pressure.Tilt your head from one side to the other; bring your ear to your shoulder. Repeat 10 times on each side. Clasp your hands together behind your head. Push your head back into your hands and hold for five seconds. Repeat four times. Circle your shoulders back and forward with your arms by your sides. Repeat four times. Push your back into the seat and arch forwards to stretch your back. Repeat four times. Push your knees and thighs together, tighten your buttock muscles and hold for five seconds. Repeat four times. With your foot, trace the letters of the alphabet to keep the circulation going. Regularly mobilise the ankles and massage the calves.Be vigilant for the symptoms of DVT, in particular pain in the calves, during and for up to a month after long journeys.
